The Herons of St. John

(Family: ARDEIDAE)

Most members of this family wade in swamps and marshes looking for fish, frogs and other prey which they spear with their long, pointed bills. The Great Blue Heron, recognized by its grey body, is the largest heron in the region. It builds it's nest in remote swamps and the nest is made of a platform of sticks. Two to four bluish eggs are laid.
